More info about the project

The Northern Forests Initiative: Forest Restoration in North Macedonia and Albania is a 23-minute documentary born from three months of intensive fieldwork, collaboration, and hands-on storytelling. Through this project, I had the opportunity to witness firsthand the dedication of experts, local communities, and conservation teams as they work to restore fragmented forests, reconnect habitats, and strengthen the resilience of these landscapes.

The film explores the ecological, social, and cultural dimensions of forest restoration, highlighting how human action and nature can coexist to rebuild balance in regions long affected by deforestation and environmental pressures. From reforestation efforts to community-led initiatives, the documentary captures both the challenges and successes of restoring these vital northern forest ecosystems.

Supported by IUCN ECARO and the Swedish Postcode Lottery Foundation, the Northern Forests Initiative seeks to recover degraded forests across northern Albania and North Macedonia, demonstrating a model of conservation where ecological recovery and community well-being go hand in hand. This documentary serves as both a record of that work and a reflection on the importance of preserving and restoring Europe’s northern forests for the future.
